Jeffrey Bergman is a partner in the Chicago office of Harrison LLP where he practices law in the areas of estate planning, transfer and income tax planning, and charitable planning. He has extensive experience working with entrepreneurs, professionals, and others on their personal estate planning, helping clients to refine their objectives, and evaluating and discussing techniques and legal best practices. He has particular expertise in the intersection of income tax with estate and gift tax planning.
Jeffrey also represents individual and corporate fiduciaries, advising on estate and trust administration, income tax reporting, and trust investments. He is a former trust company general counsel, and prides himself on offering a practical approach that minimizes risk and maximizes good working relationships between trustees and beneficiaries.
Jeffrey finds this area of legal practice rewarding, since it allows him to meet with people from different walks of life, learn about their backgrounds and hopes, and help protect their legacies. He often says that estate planning is the “liberal arts college” of the legal world, since it values curiosity, flexibility, and human connections. No client is the same, so the lawyer’s first job is to listen and understand.
Outside of work, Jeffrey enjoys reading, cooking holiday meals, camping out in the woods, and spending time with his kids.
