Susan Berman focuses her practice on wealth transfer tax reduction through gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer tax planning. This includes directly advising clients and their advisors on various strategies – taking into account tax, business, and personal goals – and the drafting of sophisticated estate planning documents to implement them.
Susan’s practice also includes advising individuals and business owners with respect to asset protection and succession planning, the representation of decedents’ estates, trust administration, conflict resolution, planning with charitable vehicles, and gift and estate tax return preparation. In addition, Susan has significant experience counseling beneficiaries and fiduciaries in disputed trust and estate matters and negotiating family settlements.
Susan is a member of the Chicago Estate Planning Counsel and JUF Professional Advisory Committee. She previously served on the Board of Directors of Educate Bwindi, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity dedicated to supporting the education of children in Bwindi, Uganda.
